A Silbatta is a traditional Indian grinding stone. It has two parts: a flat stone (the base) and a cylindrical or oval stone (the grinder). People use it to grind spices, herbs, or chutneys by hand, rubbing the smaller stone on the flat one. It’s like an old-style mixer but doesn’t need electricity!

How to use Silbatta for Chutney's and Masala
Prepare Ingredients
Gather fresh ingredients like coriander leaves, mint leaves, garlic, ginger, chilies, salt, and tamarind or lemon juice (based on the chutney type).
Wash and chop the ingredients into smaller pieces to make grinding easier.
Start Grinding
Place a small amount of the ingredients on the silbatta.
Use the roller (sil) to crush and grind the ingredients with a back-and-forth motion. Apply steady pressure to extract the juices and blend the flavors.
Adjust Texture
Add water (a little at a time) to achieve the desired consistency for your chutney—thicker for dipping, thinner for spreading or mixing.
Finish and Serve
Once ground to a smooth or coarse texture, scrape off the chutney using a spoon or knife. Serve fresh with your favorite dishes.
